I've been writing about Mozilla quite a lot lately (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), now that Firebird has -- quite unexpectedly -- become my browser of choice on Windows, Mac OS X (Safari notwithstanding), and Linux. In a recent column I implored AOL to do the right thing by Mozilla, and it seems that is happening. Today AOL announced financial and logistical support for the newly-hatched Mozilla Foundation. Netscape hired me three years ago, AOL laid me off today (technically, having a french contract of employment, I am still employed; we don't throw away people in ten seconds here. We take thirty seconds, that's cleaner). AOL axed Netscape by the same time. People, it's over. Netscape is dead. Nothing to see here.The Netscape servers division was dissolved into Sun a few years ago. Now that the client part is dead, there is nothing left from Netscape. Sad story indeed. Freed from Freedom FightersAOL has begun dismantling their Mozilla team (thx Dave). I am not sure whether I should be happy or sad.
